HeartScan (Coronary Artery
Calcification Scoring - CAC Score)
The Coronary Artery Calcification (CAC) score is considered by
many to be an excellent first test for the detection of
atherosclerosis or coronary arterial plaque (hardening of the
arteries). Calcium detection gives us a way to determine the total
plaque burden of the arteries supplying blood to the heart. Higher
CAC scores are associated with increased risk for blockages in the
arteries, heart attack, and stroke. This test looks only for
coronary artery calcium and not for cancer or any other
abnormalities.
The HeartScan is rapid and safe and performed on an
ultra-fast PET/CT scanner. Preparation only requires placement of
electrocardiographic leads. A short breathhold is required and the
radiation is very low dose (about that of a chest x-ray).
Unfortunately, many insurance providers do not reimburse for this
procedure and we therefore request payment ($300.00) at the time of
the test. The results will be mailed to you and your physician
within 2 days. We suggest you discuss these results with your
physician to determine if further testing is needed.
